I’ve been preparing rag strips for an upcoming workshop at Saterglantan craft school in Sweden taught by Monica Hallen. I was with friends when I was frantically winding balls in preparation. Give them to us, my friends insisted, we’ll help. “How do you want them done?” they asked. It doesn’t matter, I said, they are skinny and I don’t worry about them lying flat in the shed – they get squished anyway. I proceeded to roll a big ball fairly willy-nilly as I watched Mary Skoy and Jan Mostrom carefully wind perfect, dense balls of flawlessly flat strips. Oh my, they were works of art. I was so wrong. Start them young! My 11-year-old granddaughter Alden wove a beautiful tapestry, a close look at a leaf, based on the style of Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings. She lives in L.A., and has a wonderful art teacher. She is on the left of the second photo, with her friend Kennedy. Look at all of the lovely weavings. #tapestryweaving #kidstapestryweaving
My cousin Gretchen sent me her set of Dansk dinnerware - so great! Plus she added my favorite Norwegian-tapestry-inspired set of placemats. Coffee on the Baldishol tapestry. And just to show how ridiculously Norwegian my home is, I found a rosemaled switch plate in my mother’s wooden ware closet on the farm last week. That’s what rosemalers have - closets full of wood objects to paint (instead of yarn). #baldisholteppet #familytreasures
Borrowed Baby Wolf loom in the dining room, empty then warped to test out the Frida Hansen wool transparency technique on a horizontal loom for my workshops this fall. I fully expect it will work fine! The Baby Wolf is so quick to warp. #weaving #handweaving #scandinavianweaving #tapestryweaving
I forgot about this monksbelt runner for three years, and then rediscovered it in a drawer at the Weavers Guild, while looking for something else. How could I forget it? I wove it on a group warp on February 22, 2020. I think we know what happened soon after!
