An appraiser acquaintance tipped me off to a transparent tapestry at auction this week. It’s beautiful, and I recognized the Norwegian designer. It’s a direct link from Frida Hansen to one of her followers, and then to this beautiful version from 1928 by a Norwegian-American weaver living in California, Sofie Knagenhjelm. Here’s the auction listing.
I’m happy it sold for a good bit of money – but it rose out of my price range. I plan to do more research on the weaver, and write more about the designer and compare the Knagenhjelm tapestry to one in a Norwegian museum. Do any readers know which one that might be? Watch for more this week.
Here’s a little video with a clip of the auction today on liveauctioneers.com. And forgive me, I mispronounced the name of the weaver in the video! It’s Knagenhjelm, with an “n.”
