I will be teaching my eighth workshop in Frida Hansen’s transparent tapestry technique in September. In a “returning to the mother ship” way, it will be in Norway! I feel honored. The class will be held in the weaving workshop on the grounds of the magnificent Norsk Folkemuseum, September 19-21. (I will also give a public lecture at the museum on September 19.)
I’ve been checking back through photos and emails from students in my workshops. Receiving an email with a photo of a completed transparency is like getting a gift. Before I held my first workshop, I worked so diligently to complete many samples to display, both for design ideas and to show what technical lessons I learned with each piece. On day one of workshop one, I was struck with a revelation — now I would get a set of samples I didn’t even have to weave myself! Each new warp was a new experiment.
I’m putting together a page with organized galleries of all the completed past student pieces to help in upcoming workshops. I’ve shared most completed samples over the past couple of years in this blog, but here are a few I missed. Some might have been on Instagram, but who doesn’t want to see the weavings again?
After my first ever workshop, at Vesterheim Folk Art School, Laura Demuth used the remaining warp on her loom for a second transparency, of an owl and pine trees.
Robyn Tanchum (San Diego Workshop) wove blossoms, and after she returned home, a lovely Frida bird on the rest of her warp.
Karen Willman adapted a portion of Frida Hansen’s Wild Roses design. (San Diego Workshop) See it underway in “Frida Hansen Workshop in San Diego: Part One.”
Weaving a Frida Hansen rose has happened many times.
If you would like to get in on this transparency fun, I will teach a number of workshops in the coming year. Only the Tucson one has a registration page open now. The Wisconsin workshop will be on the Wisconsin Handweavers website at the beginning of September.
