A New Frida Hansen Workshop on the Calendar

The list of upcoming workshops in Frida Hansen’s transparent tapestry technique is posted on my website. In addition to a filled workshop in Seattle at the end of this month, I am teaching at the Michigan League of Handweavers Conference in Escanaba, Michigan, in June (also filled, with a waitlist), and at the Damascus School near Portland, Oregon, in August (dates not posted yet).

We just added a workshop, close to home for me (seven minutes by car) at the beautiful home of the Weavers Guild of Minnesota, May 6-9, 2026. I’m doing this for a few reasons. Minneapolis and its businesses, including the Weavers Guild, were hit by the occupation of our city by masked ICE agents. Let’s support Minneapolis as we rebound! And seriously, May in Minneapolis is a lovely time to visit.

While I continue work on my book, my workshops create a built-in focus group for the refinement of my chapter on a sample project, in particular. Most importantly, I find it rewarding to share my knowledge and develop more Frida Hansen fans.

Welcome to the world of Frida Hansen and her wool open-warp transparencies. In this workshop, you will learn about Frida Hansen’s technique through slide-filled lectures and hands-on practice.

Students will gain inspiration through viewing many of Frida Hansen’s pieces and those of her followers, and will discuss how to design cartoons for the best outcome using her technique. By looking at many samples and the instructor’s larger pieces, you will see how various choices affect the look of the surface.

Each student will begin a sample or small piece, 9″-11″ wide, during the workshop. You can use a design provided by the instructor, or design your own.

Equipment Note: Students will need to bring a pre-warped tapestry loom and their favorite tools to the workshop. Warping instructions will be shared by the instructor a month before the workshop begins.

Materials Note: The instructor will share information on suitable weft materials a month before the workshop begins. The instructor will also have yarns available to students to purchase.

Below are a few photos from the workshop at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota two years ago. It’s a sunny and interesting space.

I’d love to see weaving friends from near and far in May.
