I was reminiscing about how rewarding it was to be in New York for the Winter Show three years ago, when Frida Hansen’s Sørover [Southward], was revealed to the world more than 90 years after it was last shown publicly. (See this post.) Recently the swans headed back to Norway for good. (See this post.)

Then I received a message from Peter Pap–another Norwegian tapestry is for sale this year, a copy of Gerhard Munthe’s Den Røde Hane [The Red Cock]. The colors look vibrant and unfaded, and it is beautifully woven. Don’t you love the squared-off birds flying above the princesses?

As noted in the label above, the Nasjonalmuseet owns a preparatory sketch.

They also own a woven version.
This was a popular design by a wonderful artist. There is a copy of the pattern in the collection of the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseet.
I also saw the pattern in the Husfliden archives at the Norsk Folkemuseum in August 2024.

If you would like a beautiful copy of Munthe’s design, head to Manhattan!

I have to wonder about the story of what appears to be a syringe containing a small amount of red substance!
