February 10, 2019 Robbie LaFleur

Although I visited several museums during my time in NYC this year, my week was notable for research rather than gallery gazing. I was on

The final Valley Grove tapestry will include a showy lady’s slipper (the Minnesota state flower and one that is found in the vicinity), a shrike, the clasped hand image from at least 12 gravestones, a meadowlark, a bluebird, the white church, an eagle, and rare dwarf trout lily. Whew! Here’s the lady’s slipper and a faint image of the cartoon. #valleygrovetapestries #billedvev #tapestryweaving #weavingmn #ladysslipper #ladysslipperorchid
Valley Grove Preservation Society board members hanging my tapestries in the 1862 stone church. It was a lovely event! More at Robbielafleur.com #valleygrovetapestries #valleygrovechurch #tapestry #billedvev #tapestryweaving
I watched The Emigrants--the older one--in anticipation of seeing a new version at the International Film Festival. It's like our house! I weave, and Mike comes in and reads the paper. Although I have traded in the floor loom for a large tapestry loom, and I don't look as good as Liv Ullmann. I love this movie! I would like to read more about the person responsible for the costuming, which seemed so authentic. Karl Oskar’s scarf looks very Swedish in design, and in the heavy homespun quality of the yarn. #theemigrantsmovie #handweaving #scandinavianweaving
The skiing pastor tapestry is done, and I even met my one week goal for sewing in ends, finishing the edges, and hemming it. More info on the inspiration behind the various design elements at Robbielafleur.com. #tapestryweaving #billedvev #valleygrovetapestries #tapestry #tapestryweaversofinstagram
Would you like to see the Valley Grove tapestries in person? The first formal unveiling will be at the Syttende Mai (Norwegian National Day) celebration on Sunday, May 15, from 2-4 pm at the Valley Grove churches. It should be festive. Besides tapestries and some of my preparatory materials, there will be Hardanger fiddlers! Full disclosure: Only the first three of the quartet of tapestries will be complete by mid-May, but it is only a good thing to look forward to a future event at Valley Grove. Instead, I will sit where the fourth tapestry will hang and demonstrate tapestry weaving. For directions from your starting point, you can enter "Valley Grove Church" in Google Maps. #valleygrovetapestries
After our brutal and endless Minnesota winter, sitting on a patio in Arizona and talking with my mother while sewing in ends on my tapestry is quite pleasant. And it’s time for a gin and tonic soon! #tapestryweaving #valleygrovetapestries
