Swans are Migrating

Trumpeter swans migrate to Minnesota in late March and early April. Perhaps it’s appropriate that a woven swan migrated to my e-maibox too. Laurie Carlson Steger, who began her swan in my Boston workshop a year ago, finished up her Frida Hansen-inspired swan in wool open warp transparent tapestry.

I emphasize in my workshops that unweaving is an important part of tapestry weaving. Sometimes you don’t understand how a color or shape will work within your design until you have begun a bit you don’t like. I remember that Laurie was very experimental along the way – with a beautiful result! You can see how different her final design was from her initial sketch. And I think she had fun!

While the workshop was underway, Laurie was thrilled to receive an invitation to travel to Norway for the TC2 conference. Later, she reported on the experience in this article in the Norwegian Textile Letter: “Ancient Techniques and the Newest Technology: The Digital Weaving Conference In Norway.”
