Høisommer

It’s a great time of year for Grete Vetås to finish her beautiful homage to Frida Hansen’s Høisommer [High Summer] transparent tapestry. It looks beautiful hanging outside in a green Norwegian summer setting, with full sun in front of it. When the sun is behind it, as it hangs in a window, the open warps become more transparent, and the narrow openings within the roses become more prominent. Look how different the small dots appear, depending on the light.

Grete noted in a post that it was common in earlier times to study the great masters by reproducing details of their work. She said she has been wild for Frida Hansen’s transparent tapestry technique since learning it last fall in my Norsk Folkemuseum workshop in Oslo. In this piece, she was inspired by a portion of Hansen’s 1921 Høisommer tapestry.

This is the portion that Grete wove:

Grete is weaving her transparent tapestries on a small floor loom. I’m excited to see what rolls off her loom next!
