I’m looking forward to my next weaving workshop in Frida Hansen’s wool open warp transparency technique, only ten minutes away at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota, situated in the beautiful Open Book building near downtown Minneapolis.
“Open Warp Transparency Weaving in the Style of Frida Hansen”
March 12-March 15, 2024
Welcome to the world of Frida Hansen and her wool open-warp transparencies! Workshop participants will learn about Frida Hansen’s technique through slide-filled lectures and hands-on practice.
We’ll begin by viewing many of Frida Hansen’s pieces and those of her followers. Then, we’ll discuss how to design cartoons for the best outcome using her technique. By looking at many samples and the instructor’s larger pieces, you’ll have an opportunity to see how various choices affect the look of the tapestry surface. Each student will begin a sample or small piece during the workshop. Use a design provided by the instructor, or design your own!

Here are close-ups of Frida Hansen’s beautiful technique.

I’m working on a large transparency, “Nest,” celebrating the Minnesota summer breeding grounds of the golden-winged warbler. I really hope to have it finished by the time of the class. One of the things I like about this technique is that you sew in the ends periodically as you weave, so that when you are done weaving, there is much less finishing work to be done. I just finished a border of asters; here is the before and after of one blossom, with the ends woven back into the surface with a large needle.

If you are interested in attending a workshop, there will be another from September 12-15 at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. (Registration for this class opens on February 20.)
